Steps to Take After a Car Accident

Did you know that on an average day in Ontario, motor vehicle collisions will injure more than 180 people, making motor vehicle incidents the biggest risk Ontarians face each day (IHSA)?

The leading cause of car accidents is negligent drivers, impaired driving, distracted driving and speeding. Even if you’re a safe driver, car accidents happen, and when they do, it's crucial to know the steps to take immediately to ensure everyone's safety and streamline the claims process.

At E. Bollenbach Insurance Brokers, we are here to guide you through this challenging time with a straightforward, step-by-step approach to what to do after a car accident.

1. Ensure Safety First

  • Check for Injuries: Assess yourself and your passengers for any injuries. If anyone is hurt, call 911 immediately.

  • Move to a Safe Location: If it's safe and the vehicles are driveable, move them to the side of the road to prevent further accidents, and turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers.

2. Contact the Authorities

  • Call the Police: The Ontario Highway Traffic Act requires any accidents to be reported within 24 hours if any person is injured or damage to the vehicles is over $2,000.

  • Follow Instructions: When the police arrive, provide them with accurate information. Avoid admitting fault or blaming the other party.

3. Document the Scene

  • Take Photos: Use your smartphone to take pictures of the vehicles, licence plates, the accident scene, and any visible injuries.

  • Gather Information: Exchange names, contact details, insurance information, and driver's licence numbers with the other driver(s). Also, note the make, model, and colour of the other vehicles involved.

  • Witnesses: If there are witnesses, get their contact information as well. Their statements can be valuable for your claim.

4. Notify Your Broker or Your Insurance Company

  • Contact your Broker: As soon as possible after a claim, call your broker with all the details pertaining to the accident. If the broker is not available, please call your Insurance Company's Claims line.

  • File a Claim: Follow the instructions provided by your insurance broker to file a claim. They will guide you through the process and explain what to expect next.

5. Seek Medical Attention

  • Visit a Doctor: Even if you feel fine, some injuries might not be immediately apparent. A medical evaluation can ensure that you haven’t sustained any hidden injuries.

  • Keep Records: Save all medical reports and receipts as they may be needed for your claim.

6. Follow Up

  • Stay in Touch: Keep in contact with your insurance broker for updates on your claim. They are your advocate and will help you navigate the process.

  • Repair Your Vehicle: Once your claim is approved, follow the instructions provided to get your vehicle repaired. Ensure you keep all receipts and documentation related to the repairs.

Additional Tips

  • Stay Calm: Accidents are stressful, but staying calm and collected will help you manage the situation more effectively.

  • Don’t Admit Fault: Discuss the accident only with the police and your insurance company. Avoid admitting fault or discussing specifics with the other driver.

  • Understand Your Coverage: Familiarize yourself with your insurance policy to understand what is covered and what steps you need to take.
